Because when cut backs occur, the union forces the principal to lay off the teachers with the least seniority first.It doesn't matter how good they may be. Schools are now set up for the benefit of the teachers union, as a jobs program. They're not set up for the kids. How else can you explain why the TEACHER OF THE YEAR is being laid off in this city?
Ms. Taft has a valid point. More dollars per teacher means fewer teachers for any given teacher hiring budget. Too often, those added dollars go to pay for advanced degrees that bring few benefits to student learning. This is a long-standing Oregon education weakness.
